Due to the massive number of novels that use Forgotten Realms as setting I've always had problems to keep proper track of all the stories that took place in Toril. Fortunately, I've just found out this series of audio reviews of several Forgotten Realms books on YouTube.
"Realms Remembered" is very helpful, especially if you have no intention of reading all the novels published in this cenario, but as DM is more interested in finding out general information and the chronological order of some of the events that take place in the books. It also helps a lot to define wich books are more relevant (and easy to read) to the period of the Toril history that you are running your game.
Keep in mind that there are more than 270 novels published about Forgotten Realms and that the author chose to gloss over a lot of them, but he usually explain why he did it and you may decide to read the ones he didn't.
